AcupuncturePractitioners:Christine Fadhley Yaxi Li An ancient system of healing where fine needles are briefly inserted to stimulate nerves and release the body's natural painkillers. It can relieve arthritis, migraine, asthma and many more conditions and symptoms. Acupuncture is a treatment which can relieve symptoms of some physical and psychological conditions and may encourage the patient's body to heal and repair itself, if it is able to do so. Many people come to acupuncture for help with specific symptoms or conditions. For example: • anxiety states • arthritis • asthma • back pain • circulatory problems • depression • facial paralysis • high blood pressure • infertility • menstrual problems • migraines • rheumatism • sciatica • skin conditions or ulcers • digestive problems Acupuncture stimulates the nerves in skin and muscle producing a variety of effects: increasing the body's release of natural painkillers - endorphin and serotonin - in the pain pathways of both the spinal cord and the brain. This modifies the way pain signals are received. But acupuncture does much more than reduce pain, and has a beneficial effect on health. Patients often notice an improved sense of well-being after treatment. This is an ancient system of healing and the earliest texts date back 2500 years. This system of medicine has successfully been used in China from ancient times and is still used today. In the West acupuncture has been widely used in the treatment of pain but it has a much wider area of effectiveness when used to stimulate our own healing responses. Each patient's case will be assessed by the practitioner and treatment will be tailored to the individual; so it is impossible to give more than a general idea of what treatment might involve. Typically, fine needles are inserted through the skin and left in position briefly, sometimes with manual or electrical stimulation. The number of needles varies but may be only two or three. Treatment might be once a week to begin with, then at longer intervals as the condition responds. A typical course of treatment lasts 5 to 8 sessions. Click here to go to the top. We aim to help you achieve your goal. • Adults and children can benefit. The ideas are very simple but do require dedication to practise in order to achieve the result. As with many things, you get out what you put in! Bad breathing habits require time to correct but most people see beneficial results after just one week. This is a scientifically proven treatment, clinical trial results are available on the Internet for all to see. Click here to go to the top. Bowen TechniquePractitionerClaire Phillipson A hands-on therapy of gentle moves over muscle to realign, rebalance and repair. Non-intrusive and very effective.Good for sports injuries, back and neck pain, headaches, asthma, hayfever and many other common health issues. The Bowen Technique is a gentle, unique and very effective ‘hands on’ remedial therapy, which stimulates the body to rebalance itself, and promotes healing, pain relief and recovery of energy. It is a holistic therapy, which depends on the ability of the body to heal itself if given the opportunity to do so. Who and what can it help? As it is so gentle, Bowen treatment is regarded as appropriate for all ages and states of health and there are no known adverse side effects. It may be used to relieve infant colic and can improve the quality of life for the terminally ill. Common presenting conditions include: • Muscular and skeletal pain such as back pain, frozen shoulder, sporting and work-related injuries, knee problems • Fibromyalgia and similar conditions • Respiratory problems including asthma, bronchitis, hay fever • Migraine and recurring headaches • Chronic fatigue syndrome • General relaxation and body balancing • Bowen can help during pre- and post-operative periods, for instance before and after hip replacement • There is a growing body of evidence that it assists in cases of cerebral palsy and related problems • Children and even small babies respond especially well to Bowen treatment and it is also ideal to keep the body comfortable and balanced during pregnancy What is involved in a Bowen treatment? Bowen treatment consists of a series of 'rolling' type moves over muscle, tendon and other soft tissue. During the treatment there are breaks that allow the body to absorb and respond to the work. There is no hard tissue adjustment or manipulation, no massage, no deep pressure. . A Bowen session usually lasts about an hour with 35-50 minutes spent on the treatment itself. This includes the breaks when the therapist will normally leave the room. This gives you an opportunity to rest quietly whilst your body takes on the work. It also enables the therapist to assess any changes and respond accordingly. Treatment may be given directly on the skin or over light, loose clothing if preferred. Even long standing problems can resolve in 2-4 sessions though individual response varies and some people may need further appointments. Initially the appointments are spaced a week apart as changes continue to develop 7-10 days after treatment. Many people find that longer term benefits can be achieved by regular maintenance which you will be advised to do if appropriate. HypnotherapyPractitioner:David Woolley You won't be sent to sleep but you will be deeply relaxed and more ready to accept suggestions that will boost your will power and confidence. Can help with all sorts of stress, phobias and compulsive behaviour like smoking and over eating. Hypnosis is a state of deep and pleasant relaxation, much like daydreaming or reverie, and is used as a tool in psychotherapy when therapeutic suggestions are more readily accepted. It offers a natural treatment for many conditions which arise from the stresses of modern living. It is important to note that no-one can be hypnotised against their will. Hypnosis is essentially a voluntary state so far as the client is concerned and requires the whole-hearted co-operation of the client. Frequently, clients arrive for therapy with the mistaken belief that they will be unconscious or "asleep". At the end of the session, they frequently express the feeling they were not hypnotised, claiming "I heard every word...". Although relaxed, clients are in a state of high focus and awareness, and will hear every word: it is, of course, important for this to be so if suggestions are to be effective! The media presentations of hypnosis are especially directed at entertainment, rather than therapy, and are normally seriously misleading. Clients need to be aware of this. Hypnotherapy can be used for any number of anxiety problems, phobias, compulsive behaviour (smoking, nail biting, etc.), weight loss and many other problems. Neuro-Linguistic Programming (N.L.P.) can work on similar problems, but takes a different approach. It works along with the thought process, changing the way we relate to life events, so we can feel and behave in a way which supports achieving the results we want. It generally is a quicker process than hypnotherapy and can be equally, if not more, effective in some areas. Click here to go to the top. Hydrotherm MassagePractitioners:Fiona Durling Sharon Daly Lie back on a cushion of warm water for this all over relaxing massage to improve circulation, reduce stress, help relieve pain and improve mobility among other things. Ideal for people with mobility problems, including pregnant women, because you don't need to turn over during the treatment. The unique massage, lying on a cushion of warm water, allows a complete massage to be done without having to turn over once! Hydrotherm involves a three-dimensional massage technique allowing the therapist to slide their hands under, over and around the client's body, uninterrupted. Through water displacement, rather than physically lifting the client, the therapist uses the client's body weight as the source of pressure, allowing a deeper, more "holistic" massage. This massage can be combined with most of the other treatments available at The Marjorie Centre. So, whether it a relaxing aromatherapy or a remedial massage that you're looking for, this is the one for you. Click here to go to the top. Leaflets explaining many of the common treatments used are available from the Osteopathic Information Service. Osteopathy is an established recognised system of diagnosis and treatment, which lays its main emphasis on the structural and functional integrity of the body. It is distinctive by the fact that it recognises that much of the pain and disability which we suffer stems from abnormalities in the function of the body structure as well as damage caused to it by disease. ReflexologyPractitioners:Irena Beaumont Sharon Daly Christine Fadhley Specialised massage to the feet can ease symptoms in corresponding parts of the body which are out of balance. Having been used for centuries, it can help a wide variety of problems as well as promoting a feeling of well being. This is a gentle, non-invasive therapy involving the massage of reflex areas in the feet. Every single point on the foot represents a different part of the body and these are arranged in a way to form a map of the body with the right foot corresponding to the right side of the body and the left foot corresponding to the left side of the body. Reflexology is suitable for all age groups and can help ease the symptoms of many disorders including: • back pain • sinusitis • depression • hay fever • pmt • stress • high/low blood pressure and much more Reflexology does not hurt, in fact it is a deeply relaxing treatment and some people even fall asleep during treatment. All areas on both of the feet are treated. Areas corresponding to parts of the body which are out of balance may feel uncomfortable when treated. Some people only feel the pressure applied to their foot: Others feel a bruise like sensation: Certain reflex points may feel sharp: Some people feel a sensation in the area of the body being treated: Others feel a tingling sensation running through the zone being treated. These sensations indicate the strength of the imbalance and vary from person to person. Click here to go to the top. ShiatsuPractitioner:Isabel Wilson A traditional Japanese therapy used to unblock energy trapped in the body. The hands-on techniques help to improve the energy flow and rebalance the body. This traditional, hands-on Japanese is useful for curing a wide range of conditions - from specific injuries to more general symptoms of poor health. The philosophy behind it is that there are vital energy flows throughout the body (known in Japanese as "Ki") through channels called meridians. These can stop flowing for any number of reasons, producing symptoms. Your Shiatsu practitioner considers your state of health and your symptoms and will use a variety of techniques to improve your energy flow. This can include gentle holding, pressing with palms, thumbs, fingers, elbows, knees and feet on the meridians. Conditions that can be helped by Shiatsu include: • Back pain • Headaches, migraines • Whiplash injuries and neck stiffness • Join pain • Menstrual problems • Digestive problems • Asthmatic symptoms • Sports injuries • Depression When receiving Shiatsu: • Please bring or wear loose, warm, comfortable clothing, preferably cotton: e.g., sweatshirt, tracksuit trousers and cotton socks • Do not eat heavily in the two hours prior to treatment • Do not drink alcohol before or after treatment • After treatment, drink plenty of water to smooth the flow of changes throughout the system • If at all possible, avoid strenuous or stressful activities after your session. Thermo Auricular Therapy or Hopi Ear Candle TreatmentPractitioners:Irena Beaumont Sharon Daly Christine Fadhley This wonderful treatment is soothing and helpful for earache and headaches, ear noise, stress and nervousness. This induces a pleasant feeling of warmth and a balance of pressure in the ears, forehead and sinuses. The treatment is particularly good for: • colds • sinusitis • ear infections • tinnitus • vertigo • labrynthitis • hay fever • also if you have problems when flying. The ear candles have a purely physical function. A light suction action (chimney effect) and the movement of the flame create a vibration of air in the ear candle, generating a massage effect on the eardrum. The physical effect is often described directly after the treatment as a soothing, pressure and pain relieving sensation mainly in the ear and head area. Treatment can also ease nasal breathing and improve sense of smell. The treatment is also wonderfully relaxing and clients have often drifted off to sleep during treatments, and following a treatment they always sleep very well. The candles are soaked in bees wax, honey and essential oils and herbs which synergistically help to bring about balance and harmony. Only the best quality Biosun Candles are used. This treatment is safe to use on children of all ages so long as they do not have grommets in their ears. Click here to go to the top. This flow of energy is often experienced as a sensation of heat or tingling. It is very relaxiing and many people feel a sense of timelessnes. The most common effects are a deep sense of relaxation and inner peace. This creates an ideal environment in which body and mind can maximise their natural processes. Hot Stone TherapyPractitioners:Julie Ridge The application of water-heated basalt stones, hot stone therapy targets key points on the body, giving a deep massage and creating sensations of comfort and warmth. The direct heat that hot stone therapy provides, relaxes muscles allowing manipulation of a greater intensity than with regular massage. A Hot Stone therapy massage expands the blood vessels and pushes blood and unwanted waste materials through the body. This has a sedative effect on the nervous system. If you have a muscular injury and inflammation, frozen, cooling marble stones are used instead. This creates a thermotherapeutic effect in your circulatory system to help the body detoxify and heal. The cold stones cause the blood vessels to constrict and stimulate the nervous system and draws blood and waste products through the body. This ensures that every cell in the body receives more oxygen and nutrients while at the same time waste material is removed more effectively through the corresponding increase in lymph flow.
